Monarch Eggs-I Feel Like a Kid Again!

June 29th, 2007 · 3 Comments

About two weeks ago I was picking strawberries on the side of my deck in a space you can barely walk in and noticed a flower or weed growing back by the fence. I let it grow to see what it was. I thought maybe some kind of wildflower. It bloomed when we got back from our trip on Monday and it had a faded, mauve color of tiny flowers and I dismissed it and decided to let it alone as you couldn’t see it unless you went back there.

Earlier this spring, I wanted a butterfly bush to lure butterflies to my yard. They grow too big for my tiny yard. I got some other plants that are suppose to attract butterflies. A couple of weeks ago I saw my first butterfly. It was white. When we came back from our trip the other day I saw a blackish-blue one but it wasn’t a swallowtail. Today I saw a white one, a dark bluish one and a Monarch all flutter around in my garden.

I read a blog today that’s on my blogroll that showed pictures of milkweed. There are so many different types but her pictures looked like what was in the corner of my yard. I went back and looked today to see if I saw anything crawling on it. There was some holes where some kind of insect had eaten the leaf. Could it be? Yes, I have a couple of eggs and a teeny, tiny caterpillar. I enlarged the photo and it looks like a Monarch to me. It is so small you can’t hardly see it. This picture is greatly enlarged. I picked the leaf and added a few more to a jar because I thought the birds might eat them. There are two eggs, I think, on one of the leaves. I’m not sure what to do. I’ll have to look up how to raise them. It’s exciting. It reminds me of that feeling of being a kid. I’ll be really disappointed if it isn’t a Monarch and it is some kind of moth or grub. But I see stripes!

    Linda
I’m in Delaware right now but it sure looks like a monarch caterpillar. So find lots of milkweed leaves. I’ll email you when I get home on sunday.

I now have two caterpillars! One of the eggs must have hatched. My mothering instinct has been kicked into high gear. I must prepare a nest, ha. I have only one milkweed plant but it’s about 4 ft. tall with plenty of leaves and looks like it is still sending out new leaves. This plant sure looks like the kind I see at Presque Isle on my walks. I’ll have to keep my eyes open for photo ops at Presque Isle. I didn’t even have to buy a milkweed plant. Thanks, Toni, I’ll look forward to your email. I know you are experienced in raising Monarchs.
