A while back I posted a recipe for bird bells. This one below I got as a comment in my “about” section of my website and it seems to be much simpler to make. I don’t know if the heat of summer would make this fall apart or not but for winter it should be great. If you try it, let me know how it works out for you. I think I’ll try it when I get some time. I’m assuming dar is talking about Knox Gelatin. But maybe Jello would work but I don’t know if the colorings or flavorings would be good for the birds or if they would be safe. But we eat it.

I use gelatin to make my bird seed bells. No cooking needed. Just melt with a tad of water in a microwave, cool and mix with seed then form your bell, let dry and the birds will love you forever.

What kind of seeds should I use? We buy cracked sunflower seeds. Will that work or should we use a harder grain?

I used both kinds of sunflower seeds and mixed in the trail mix seed, too, but I used the egg white recipe that I posted earlier. I think I have some Knox gelatin in the cupboard and I’ll try it. The cost of the gelatin plus the feed may end up costing more than buying a bell. But you do have control of what goes in the bell. I haven’t bought gelatin for so long I don’t know how much it costs. Think of the shapes you could make using molds. Maybe would make a good Christmas present for a bird lover.
