Finished Antique Frame and Print

November 30th, 2007 · 3 Comments

I finally finished the antique frame and print that I bought last weekend. It’s up on the wall and I just love it. The colors of the print are perfectly matched to the colors in our living room. The frame took some work but I liked how it turned out. Now I’m working on the other frames I bought a couple of weeks ago. Click thumbnail below to enlarge.

The frame is beautiful. Did you have to repaint it? I have an old fame–if I could make it look like yours, I might get it down from the attic. BTW, the content of the picture is wonderful too.

Linda, I removed the print and glass and then used OOOO steel wool (the softest grade) and mineral spirits with a very light touch cleaned all the dust, dirt and old wax off of it and then vacuumed all the steel wool dust off. Then I applied some brown/black wax (to hide all the nicks and scratches in the finish) and buffed it up. (You can just fill in the nicks with wax and level it and let it dry, it may take a while but is a good way to hide these imperfections.) I used the dark brown (almost black) wax on the decorative part and left a good amount in the grooves to keep it dark. I applied gold wax as a highlight on the high relief areas with my finger. When that dried I buffed it. I had to glue and clamp some glue blocks in the corners on the back to strengthen the frame. There were a few gaps in the mitered corners that I couldn’t force together so I used dark walnut wood filler and then covered it with black wax to match. The good thing about using the waxes is that it protects and colors but can also be removed with mineral spirits any time down the road if you wanted it back to its original state. The glass is old and wavy but I was still able to use the razor blade on it to get most of the dirt and who knows what else off. I then followed it up with denatured alcohol to make it really clean before returning it to the frame.

The print was dirty, too. I took a soft paint brush and some tissue to clean it. There was quite a bit of dirt on it. The print has a date stamp of 1900 on it and is on very heavy paper.
