Pileated Woodpecker

January 22nd, 2008 · 5 Comments

The Pileated Woodpecker is almost as large as a crow. My in-laws have a pair feeding at their suet feeder year-round. I haven’t seen one up close yet (I saw 2 in my lifetime but they were farther away.) When I go to my in-laws house I stand watching the feeder for a lot of my visit. They are going to keep track for me the time of day that the Pileated show up to up my chances of seeing it. My father-in-law gave me a picture he snapped of the Pileated while the male bird was eating lately. They said the Pileated pair used to be shy and wouldn’t come around the tree to feed. But lately they are coming all the way around the tree so they can see his full body from the window. They said he announces his visit with a call. How exciting it would be to have a bird like that 10 feet from your house eating away. They said he actually eats the suet softly and doesn’t peck it very hard. Until I get my own picture or video of the birds, this is the one they gave me. We think we see their hole high up in a big tree. Click the thumbnail to enlarge.

I’ve only seen a pileated twice in my back yard here in the cities but I see the more often at Hasty Brook. It’s always a treat.

How amazing to have them send you this pictures! Only a matter of time my friend! I wonder why it is suddenly coming to the suet feeder? You think it has something to do with the recession?
