Pileated Caught on Video

January 27th, 2008 · 8 Comments

We stopped out at my in-laws yesterday to drop of a bird feeder we bought them. My mother-in-law told me it was too bad I wasn’t at the house between 8:15 and 9:00 AM because that is when the Pileated Woodpeckers usually come. It was 3 in the afternoon. I looked out the window and there they were. The male and female Pileated feeding at the suet feeder. I didn’t have my camcorder and my point and shoot camera was in the car. My husband ran out and got it (luckily it didn’t scare them off) and just as I turned the camera on, the female flew away. but the male stayed awhile. I could just kick myself for not taking my camcorder with me as it zooms in a lot more than my little camera. Oh well, it gives me something to look forward to.

Cool video!! I love how he jabs rather gently at the suet. They are such a treat to see.

Yeah . . . you have been wanting this video for a while! BTW: What camcorder do you have? I just got the JVC GZ-MG555 and not that all happy with it!

We have had a pair of pileated woodpeckers for years but they never have come to our feeders. They are in our side woods and you can set your clock by them. We hear them returning to their
“house” every day 30 minutes before sundown. It is amazing. They are very shy, but can be loud. I’ve enjoyed your photos and think I may move a suet bar to the trunk of a tree. Thanks - Carol

Tom: My camcorder is almost 9 years old. It is a Sony Handycam DCR-TRV8 miniDV. It has been acting up a lot lately by recording bars across the picture. You never know if it does it until you play it back so it’s pretty undependable. But it takes great video when it works so I’m bummed I left it at home. Thanks for telling me about the JVC GZ-MG555. What part about it don’t you like? I’m looking at new camcorders. My nephew’s wife has a new HD hard-drive camcorder that takes incredible video (she didn’t mention what brand hers was, though.)

Carol. I did notice that their suet feeders are nailed to the trees and that they get many, many different woodpeckers all the time. The woodpeckers love hopping backwards down the tree to the feeder, so do the nuthatches. Maybe that is the secret. Hang it on the side of the tree.

I just set up a feeder like that in my woods today. I pointed my new game camera at it. I won’t get video, but I hope I get some good pix to share.

    Awesome Linda.

Hmm maybe I should nail my suet feeder to the tree.
