Maybe they returned last week but I’ve been looking for them and yesterday I finally spotted my first one of the season. He was flying to branches back and forth across the main pathway to the lagoons where you can see the eagles’ nest across the marsh. That orange color is just so brilliant!
The owls are getting lots of attention. We stopped yesterday late evening and there were still a little crowd gathered taking a look. All the times I’ve been to Presque Isle I have never seen an owl before this. In the “Birds of Presque Isle State Park” pamphlet, they list 8 kinds of owls that can be found in the park at different times, of which 2 species are known to nest there. One is the Eastern Screech Owl and the other the Great Horned Owl.
We stopped to take another look at the eagles and their huge nest using just our binoculars. It was good to see a boy there with his parents so interested in all the birds, deer and beavers around him. More parents should take their kids to the park to watch the birds and animals and get an appreciation for what a great park we have here. It’s more than just some beaches where you can swim.
